Improving Response Scene Safety for

Firefighters & Emergency Personnel Workshop

Every fire officer should maximize the effectiveness,

efficiency, and safety of each firefighter under their

command at the scene of any emergency. This effort

will also lead to the protection of firefighters, other

emergency personnel, and civilians involved in the

incident. Fire police officers can assist the fire officer

in reaching this goal by helping to provide a safer

environment for other firefighters, other emergency

personnel, and the civilians at the emergency scene.

This workshop will help fire officers:

• Interpret state laws that grant fire police officers

their authority.

• Identify the procedures a person must follow to

become a member of a fire police squad.

• Understand the general duties of a fire police squad.

• Recognize the mental and physical requirements necessary to serve as a fire police officer.

• Realize the importance of properly equipping fire police with the necessary tools to effectively and safely

carry out their duties.

• Use fire police effectively in incident command or incident management situations.

• Identify ways in which fire police can help increase safety at everyday alarms.

• Appreciate the importance of training as a necessary part of the

fire police squad and the fire department as a whole.

• Prepare fire police members for interacting with the media.
